Castle Blackguard

Castle Blackguard, built of unyielding dark stone, defends the Western Approaches to Avalon. When Arthur summons bold knights to join him against invading Saxons. Richard, a knighted architect working on Blackguard's walls, is left in charge.

In charge of what? Young ladies streamto Castle Blackguard for protection. Richard, with a few remaining knights and squires, organizes a meager defense. His new wards volunteer to don armor, and fight at Richard's side.

Then, alas, Britomartis, Queen of Avalon, passes.
  
Evermore the immortals, goddesses of the Tor, look to Richard as their temporal agent. I ask you, can a mere man carry such a burden?

He tries. the ladies now call him “Lord Richard,” though at best he is “Richard, Holder of Castle Blackguard.”
